to you. i'm craig melvin coming to you from washington, d.c., where we are covering the president's second inauguration, but today is a day for americans to give something back. that tops our political headlines. the president kicking off the national day of service today volunteering at a school here in the d.c. area. the first family and 500 volunteers joined him. tomorrow president obama will take the oath of office in a private white house ceremony. monday, hundreds of thousands are expected as he takes the oath on the capitol steps. former presidents clinton and carter will be present at that ceremony monday. not attending former president george h.w. bush and his father, former president bush, the younger bush staying at home because his father is sick. the president was just released from the hospital after an extended illness. also today a big development on the debt limit. a vote is scheduled for next week and we'll dig in to those details later in the show. first, though, the stars are coming out for that national day of service that we just mention mentioned. eva longoria

screamed at one time or another in television. maybe one or two people. c-span: craig j. spence. we heard a lot about craig j. spence here in this town. i'm not sure the rest of the country did because it was a washington times story about his "escapades." where did you meet craig j. spence and who was he? >> guest: craig j. spence, when i met him in 1966, was a remarkable character. he was a young reporter for wcbs in new york city. and he was bright and funny and dapper. he affected the airs of a dandy in one moment and gen. macarthur the next. he was very well read. he was cultured. he was just the most entertaining character. lots of friends. things were always happening. a great vivid character. lots of energy. we met, as a matter of fact, in leonard bernstein's apartment. his wife, felicia montealegre at the time, was making anti-war christmas cards, which sounds silly now, of course, but people went to great lengths to be against the war in those days. it was a kind of harmless escapade. we were there covering it, and, of course, we were jockeying for position to interview ev

general manager, craig staley, runs mellow johnny's here. he's known lance armstrong since they were teenagers growing up in the dallas, they used to race against each other. for people like craig, the news has been the hardest to handle as they see their friend kind of everything kind of come unraveling around him. he told me he had his suspiciouses for some thyme. but nonetheless, he's seen lance armstrong go through what he's going through this week. even though it's self-inflicted, it is very difficult. have you -- i mean have you lost faith in him? >> no, no. there's still a lot there. you know, there's still a lot of things that he's done and accomplished outside of the seven tour de france. that's everything right now is focused on that. when you take him, the person, look at all of the things he's done, people he's inspired, people he's helped with cancer, there's a much bigger story. i think that part of the story will start to come around. a lot of people are sort of abandoning him quickly. i think that -- i think that was in some ways a rush to judgment because i've k

identified their daughter as one of the five children sexually assaulted at school by teacher craig chandler. the alleged abuse came to light after another parent called police. a jury convicted the school's principal last month. as failing to report the allegations of abuse to police. but we uncovered a federal law was also violated. by the school district. one that's supposed to be enforced by the department of education. it's called title ix. the law requires schools have policies in place and to train title ix coordinator to handle sexual harassment and abuse complaints. the coordinator's contact information must be made public. we found at the time of the allegations evergreen elementary school district wasn't following this law. do you believe that some of these children would not be victims right now if this school district had simply followed the law? >> without a doubt. >> no doubt in my mind. >> reporter: bob and paul are bay area attorneys. separately representing alleged victims in civil cases against evergreen and chandler. we showed them what we uncovered. >> had they

plenty of opportunity to drill down deeper. introducing craig fugate is a challenge. the federal emergency management agency sent the people don't care about except when that's the only thing they hear about. you don't hear about them, but when a disaster strikes they are front and center in the news the federal perception is a roller coaster ride. after katrina was subject to a lot of criticism. the last four years, fema is stand in an appreciation and has risen dramatic way. it has gained a level of respect that i think it's absolutely essential and reflects the fact that leadership is really given a lot of preparations so when disaster strikes, fema is ready. not just a thought, but its relationships with different levels of government and that is due in very large part to the leadership that craig fugate has brought to fema. his background is interesting. he began as a volunteer firefighter and emergency paramedic. now if any of you have had an opportunity to interact with volunteer firefighters and paramedics come you know these are some of the very best people in our societ
